Yes, Lewis Camanachd emerge from this weekend’s fixtures in top spot in Shinty’s North Division Two for the first time!
Everyone involved in shinty should rejoice at the years of tenacity of the Lewis players for whom fulfilling every away fixture involves travel not just to the mainland, but even to far-flung places on Tir Mor like Caol and Aberdeen.
There is no lack of commitment to the game and Dubh is Gorm colours have had an impressive run of wins at home and away. The pressure is now all on the Lochcarron team now to use the couple of games they have in hand to regain the top slot. You can’t argue with the figures and the Leodsachs are certainly getting the goals they need to push them ahead on an impressive goal difference, even if the points are equal to their Lochcarron rivals.
The season is far from over for the chasing pack. Caberfeidh, Aberdeen University, Boleskine and Kilmallie are all in for a shout for third place or better. As the games in hand even themselves out the table is bound to look a little different and last Saturday’s postponed match between Aberdeen Uni and Strathglass could well be a turning point for both those teams.
It looks like it was a double shift for Ref John Matheson last Saturday with the bottom of the table clash at the Bught seeing Inverness Colts working home advantage against Lochaber before a dash up to Smith Park, Inverarnie to see locals Boleskine concede three goals to Cabers without reply.
So well done Lewis, and all single team clubs. As Stratherrick’s Ewen Fraser said in his Press and Journal interview on Saturday, shinty is about three things – ‘Physicality, Commitment and Family’.
