The Biodiversity Group enjoyed pretty perfect weather for the first work party of the year at a Forestry and Land Scotland site (close to Ault na Noire road) on Sunday 25th February, the principal reason to remove the smaller sitka spruce regeneration within this area to ensure native woodland only develops.  This will support the habitat management of the area for butterflies, dragonflies and other species. Derek Shannan from FL&S came along to support the day and excitingly tracks and evidence of water voles were spotted and recorded, Gary and Judith even spotted one! We have to time this before the bird nesting season and we have a follow up day in March to continue the clearing process.  We will then pick this up again in September/October.  Key to this site is clearing the sitka spruce as if not removed soon it will likely outcompete the native birch as it is a faster growing species. Thanks to the Nature Restoration Grant recently awarded to the group we had a supply of hand tools (bow saws and loppers) to get stuck in and we were surprised how much was cleared and how much there is! 

A huge thanks to the volunteers of the biodiversity group in giving up their time to help manage these important sites in our area. The group have more mini projects to progress this year with wildflower meadows, and more talks on the way!
