Boleskine Camanachd has progressed to round 2 of the Sutherland Cup with a 5-3 win over Aberdeen University at Farr on April 1st.
The Sir William Sutherland Cup was first won in 1923, one hundred years ago, and is hotly contested by the smaller and reserve teams from around Scotland. This year, the team from Uddingston is also included in the competition – sponsored by Tunnoch’s biscuits.
The match between Boleskine and Aberdeen University started badly for us, with a two goal deficit before Boleskine found the Aberdeen goal. The match was exciting, with the lead changing to our favour of our home team. Spectators certainly got a match to savour on one of the best shinty pitches in the Highlands.
Other first round matches were going ahead at the same time. Kingussie hit 15 goals past the Inverness keeper, with no goals from the city team in a resounding home win. Meanwhile the Glenurquhart team had journeyed over from Drumnadrochit to Cannich to play Strathglass. The local rivalry was intense and the Glenurquhart boys could not help finding the net in a massive 16 goal total against the Glaisachs, with no consolation goals for the home team. Boleskine will face Glenurquhart in Round 2, so they will have to make sure that our goal is well-defended!
You might hear that England won a football cup in 1966, but Boleskine were also winners of the Sutherland Cup that year – and in 1964. On both occasions the final was against Kyles Athletic, the team from Tighnabruach, in Argyll. Kyles won’t win in 2023, as they lost to Bute last week.
For all shinty matches, follow the fixtures, results and news at www.shinty.com or follow you team on facebook. Spectators are always welcome at home games at Inverarnie.
