People living in Stratherrick and Foyers now are in a great position to prepare our community for the coming decades. The developments underway now are the key to unlocking our own community’s capacity to make life in our area the best it can be.
Providing our own community services and the things we value are no longer about hoping some other organisation will do it for us. All across the highlands, the successful communities are those who are ‘doing it for themselves’.
Our recent Community Action Plan and now our local Place Plan give us the direction and reasoning for these current steps, but behind the land purchases and property upgrades lies a bigger goal. Current efforts are focussed on making sure we have the places to meet and use for recreation, along with venues which can provide the spaces and facilities for community support, launching and storing boats on our loch, or to grow food.
Across Scotland, local authorities have all but withdrawn from providing any services which are not a strict statutory requirement, not that Foyers or Stratherrick were ever top of any Council list. The coming generation must combat the isolation and dearth of support from government at all levels. Sometimes the most local initiatives can hope for is that centralised agencies leave them alone to get on with it!
The current phase we’re in is to secure and improve the community-owned land and buildings we have. These places are so important for our future. It is an exciting time.
