You are invited to participate as a ‘citizen scientist’ in a collaborative project related to using land data to support community land-based activities. This will involve collaborating with researchers from the James Hutton Institute to develop and implement a project related to community needs for land data, over the course of two years.

The overall objective of this project is to help rural communities build capacity in using land data to meet information needs, solve problems, and support community land-based activities, as well as to explore if and how citizen science can help build this capacity.

Land data may be related to land tenure and ownership, land use and perceived unuse, the suitability of land for community activities, routes to land access, as well as identifying potential liabilities and assets.

If useful, this project could align with the development of community planning processes such as Local Place Plans, or could help build evidence to inform community engagement activities with local landowners.

We thus aim to facilitate a citizen science approach that is driven foremost by community needs for land data, such as information related to land availability, land use, land ownership, aspirations for land, and potential opportunities for land to become available for community activities.

We also intend to find out if and how a collaborative citizen science approach can support community capacity with regard to land data and land-based activities, and will conduct interviews with citizen scientists to understand this.
