We had hoped to take delivery of our new minibus in Jan or Feb of this year but due to delays out with our controls, this hasn’t come to fruition yet but in that time we have been busy preparing terms and conditions, doing driver training for minibuses and creating the many policies that are required when starting a new project of this nature.
Good news is that we have now been given permission to use some of the funding in the meantime to hire a 9-seater van that we will be using to start our community transport service on a ‘trial and error’ basis period which will be helpful to gain feedback and see what runs are more popular etc.
We picked up the hire vehicle today and will be advertising some runs soon! Our inaugural run will be this Wednesday when our chairperson will be driving the bus for a BCC outing, which we are delighted to be able to assist with.
Due to legislation, we are required to run under what is called the Section 19 Permit; established under the Transport Act 1985, this allows non-commercial organisations to operate minibuses for hire or reward without needing a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operator licence. These permits are specifically intended for organisations that operate on a not-for-profit basis like the community trust. One of the rules of the permit is that for our regular runs that we intend to do, all passengers must pre-book services so we will be advertising a phone number and email address specifically for that purpose.
For this trial period, all travel will be free of charge until final decisions are made on the pricing structure.
We cannot wait to get started with this and see where it takes us or you that should be!
