Statkraft take control at ‘Red John’.
Tuesday, 26 March 2024

The Norwegian state energy company, Statkraft is now the owner of the proposed new hydro electric scheme based around Loch Ashie.  This is just outside the Stratherrick and Foyers area around the Essich road.

Statkraft has renamed the development.  After discussions it was clear the ‘Red John’ was not a popular or descriptive name, so the new name of the hydro scheme is to be ‘Loch na Cathrach’.  This name is said to derive from a ‘chair’ or geographical ridge where Fingal watched a battle around Drumashie Moor.

Statkraft has produced a short booklet with useful maps and information which you can read at this weblink. Loch na Cathrach Exhibition Boards by StatkraftUK - Issuu

The booklet includes an historical map of the area.  The only feature you can use to get your bearings is the Merchant’s Stone, which still sits beside the road just on the Inverness side of the new house at Achnasidhe.

Statkraft is also providing two scholarships for UHI STEM students.  Statkraft will support students for up to four years each at £3,000 per year.   Residents of Stratherrick and Foyers are eligible to apply.  Details are in the booklet linked above.

The Merchant’s Stone is beside the Essich road, just to the north west of the carriageway, a little north of Achnasidhe.
