We all want to do the right thing for our environment. It feels good to keep the place tidy and to re-use what we can and recycle when it is possible.
Around Inverness you’ll see various firms all offering to buy your scrap metal and boasting they pay the ‘best’ prices, but what does that mean?
What if you were to tidy up the garden, gather up all your aluminium drinks cans for a few months and take that broken lawnmower in to the metal merchant in Inverness – what could you expect to get in March 2023?
Firstly, you need a lot of scrap metal to make a tenner. In fact, for rusty iron scrap you need about 150 kilogrammes just to get £10, - that’s just 7p per kilo, and you don’t get paid in cash since the government banned cash payments. Best get it paid into your account by BACS. Secondly, even for non-ferrous metals the price per kilo is not much at all. Old aluminium ladders make 50p per kilo, but aluminium drinks cans earn just 20p per kilo – and it takes over 70 cans to weigh one kilo. There is better money in copper and brass, with clean brass currently commanding £3.45 per kilo.
So, tidying up and selling all that old metal won’t make you a millionaire but, if you are heading for Inverness and have some old metal or car batteries, they might just pay for a few litres of petrol to get you home.
