In late January Aird and Loch Ness Councillor Chris Ballance visited the Highland Council’s new Waste Transfer Station at the former landfill site at Inverness Longman near the Caley Thistle stadium. The massive new building will be a key location for the sorting domestic waste from Stratherrick and Foyers and the Inverness and Nairn areas. The transfer station will have a staff of six people and will be fully operational in April.
Waste from domestic sources and recycling centres will be sorted and the best use made of it. Some waste will be burned at Dunbar to generate electricity whilst metals and glass will be dealt with separately. Councillor Ballance said ‘It is important for us all to minimise the waste we produce, and for Highland Council to process our waste as effectively as we can.β― I hope that this building will allow us to increase the segregation of recyclate in time, improving its quality and value. The Scottish Government’s Deposit Return Scheme, due to start this August, will also increase recycling by, in essence, bringing back the old bottle deposit. Highland Council’s recycling rates, currently languishing at less than 40%, are too low, and I hope more can be done to encourage more recycling.”
