Student and Training Grants from the Trust
Tuesday, 18 April 2023

Stratherrick and Foyers Community Trust has been awarding grants to local people who are studying for a qualification which will help them advance in life.  With travel to college or university or the need for trainees to organise childcare or pay fees for more vocational qualifications or training, a financial grant of up to £500 per person has been available to residents.  The take up is already high, and why not? The application process is simple, and residents can make application every year.

Qualifications can improve the employment prospects for local people or enhance their skills or certification if they are self-employed.  Student and Training grants can result in a lifelong benefit for some people and help them choose a career or occupation in which they have a strong interest.

But what are the real benefits to grant recipients? Here are first-hand comments from three recent people awarded Student and Training grants – see what you think!

Laura Gwilliam writes………

‘In 2022 I received a student grant that contributed towards the cost of undertaking further education in the field of meditation and breath work.  As a stay-at-home mother, the grant proved to be helpful in meeting the costs of the course and I am now an accredited advanced Meditation Teacher and Mentor. I am now working towards the creation of a 12-week online programme aimed as providing mothers with simple, effective tools that specifically address the challenges faced during the postpartum period.

If you are planning on talking a course or becoming a student at college, I would definitely recommend contacting the local trust and applying for support towards your ongoing training or study.’

Hannah-Kelly Tay writes……….

'I received a Student Grant to support the completion of my Doctoral studies in Counselling Psychology in 2022. The Student Grant was immensely useful in assisting me to purchase books and online access to scientific journals that were necessary to complete my coursework. The Student Grant also supported me to pay for travel to and from my clinical placements. I am working towards qualification as a Counselling Psychologist this year, and I have secured full-time employment in the private sector in Glasgow. In the future, I plan to contribute my clinical experience to mental health projects in the Highlands and Islands, to 'give back' to my local community. I am deeply appreciative of the financial support from Stratherrick and Foyers Community Trust and would highly recommend to anyone studying to apply for their Student Grant to support fulfilment of their educational or vocational aspirations.'

Gill Gray writes………

'I received a student grant for my course on yoga for mental health and chronic pain along with Yin yoga in 2022.  The grant has proved useful because it has enabled me to further my studies as a yoga teacher.  I have gone on to offer a wider range of yoga classes to the local community as I’m now able to offer classes to support anyone suffering from mental health issues and chronic pain as well as hatha and yin yoga.

Many thanks to SFCT as without their financial support I wouldn’t have been able to afford this course.'

Thanks for these three for providing their comments.
