Primrose Focus by Cllr David Fraser
Tuesday, 18 April 2023

David Fraser from Drumnadrochit has been one of the Councillors representing the Aird and Loch Ness Ward on Highland Council since 2021.

For the past nine years serving members of the Highland Council have had the opportunity to become a species champion.  Councillors choose a plant, animal or insect which they can highlight.  They then raise awareness of environmental issues which may affect their chosen species.  Often, climate change or loss of habitat is of particular relevance to their chosen species.

Cllr David Fraser chose the Primrose, one of the most delicate and recognisable wayside flowers.  The flowers are all out around now, especially along stretches of local roads.

David commented ‘Yellow woodland primroses, Primula Vulgaris, have a special personal memory for me.  My mother was always delighted by them along the sides of Loch Ness and local countryside.  They remind me of her favourite time of year when plants and animals are waking up for the summer ahead.’

Primula Scotica is also found in the Highlands.  It is a smaller purple-flowered gem found in grasslands often on the coasts around the Pentland Firth.

Other councillors have chosen animals, such as East Sutherland councillor Leslie-Anne Niven who champions the Killer Whale.  The Juniper is a favourite of Cllr Andrew Jarvie, Wick whilst Kate Willis from Lochaber is an advocate for the beaver.  Jackie Hendry supports the Common Toad.
