New bin for waste collections from Spring 2024

Highland Council has announced that households in Stratherrick and Foyers will be getting an additional grey-coloured bin in the next twelve months. There will be lots of information from the Council before the new service starts in early 2024, but there is always great interest in bins, so here is what we know now.

The new grey bin will be collected every two weeks. It will be a new 180 litre size. This is slightly smaller than the 240 litre bins we might be used to. The grey bin will be for general waste – the stuff that is unlikely to be recycled, like disposable nappies and plastic film.

The green bin you have at the moment is set to be repurposed. It will be for your old plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays, cans, tins and cartons. It will be collected once every four weeks.

The blue bin you have just now will also get a new purpose. It will be used exclusively for paper and card. The bin lorry will come every four weeks for to empty the blue bins.

Cllr Chris Ballance told the Stratherrick and Foyers News ‘The new bin routine is expected to increase recycling rates by 5%. The general waste bin will still be collected every fortnight, but it will be a little smaller. That will encourage us to think more about recycling as much as we can. There will be a significant publicity campaign ahead of the new arrangements which are due to take effect in early 2024.’
