On Saturday 6th December, a group of volunteers spent the day at Foyers Bay tying up some loose ends before winter properly sets in.  We’ve made steady progress this year, with our launch date in May announcing that the slipway was available for use, alongside our floating moorings.  We now also have a welfare unit and electricity, along with secure boat storage for members.  We are pleased with what we have achieved at the Bay over the last couple of years – it’s turning into a fantastic community asset.

The team on Saturday successfully installed slipway markers as a directional aid for slipway users, cleared scrub around the perimeter fence and carried out a general tidy up of the site.  We were also lucky enough to receive a donation of native tree saplings from The Woodland Trust this Autumn to enable us to plant a hedge on the inside of the perimeter fence, which the team planted.  This will not only provide food and shelter for native wildlife but also, once grown, provide privacy and protection of the yard.  If you have been down to the area since Saturday, you may have noticed that the saplings are surrounded by a layer of sheep's wool (kindly donated by Dell Farm, Whitebridge).  The wool provides a number of benefits - it protects the saplings from frost, deters deer, and as the wool breaks down it releases nitrogen into the soil.

Thank you to everyone who helped out throughout the day, and we look forward to further developments at the Bay next year to encourage wider use of the facility for the community for many years to come.
